Job title: ENGINEERING MANAGER – HARDWARE AND DESIGN SERVICES
Responsible to: Engineering Director
Responsible for:
o Electronic Design and Development group
o Design Services group
Overall Purpose/Objectives of Role
1. Management of the Hardware and Design Services groups to provide the electronic and mechanical specification, design, development, analysis and verification capabilities required to support design/development programmes and business needs
2. Management of the Hardware and Design Services groups to support continued manufacturing activities within the company
3. Development and control of Hardware and Design services processes to accord with Company, Health & Safety and legal & regulatory requirements
Key duties:
1. To demand technical excellence from Engineering
2. To drive the philosophy and implementation of continuous improvement into Engineering activities
3. To continuously monitor the effectiveness of processes, with particular focus on Quality, Cost and Delivery performance, and systematically improve the processes to improve QCD
4. To provide overall management of all aspects of the Hardware and Design Services engineering functions
5. To develop the staff and facilities to support the ongoing needs of the business, and in support of the company strategy and objectives
6. To monitor and manage forward load to support the budgetary and programme requirements of the company
7. To coordinate the engineering approach across all programmes, providing a clear and consistent approach to the engineering disciplines
8. To provide technical support to other departments as required
9. To assess the availability and suitability of new technologies and techniques to be incorporated into products and processes, and to introduce and integrate appropriate technologies and techniques
10. To manage functional group performance against budget and schedule, and assist the Technical Management and Program Management groups in resolving technical and resource problems to achieve project and company targets
11. To assist the Engineering Director in the formulation of Departmental strategy, in support of the company business and strategic objectives
12. To provide technical support, including customer liaison, to the Marketing department at both our clients and their customers’ premises
13. To develop innovative design solutions in response to market and customer needs
Competency area
Technical Management Experience Technical Background
- A wide ranging background in aerospace design, with extensive experience of either the electronic or design services disciplines
- A wide knowledge of the operational, qualification and certification requirements for aerospace systems
- Detailed knowledge of either electronic design or mechanical design methodologies
- Experience and understanding of working within the constraints of formal configuration management
- Ability to establish and maintain credible technical authority across Hardware and Design Services disciplines
- Ability to establish and maintain credible technical support to other Engineering functions, and to non-Engineering functions including senior management, and to customers and regulatory authorities
Engineering processes
- Experience of operating within a structured Life Cycle Management process
- Experience of developing and implementing engineering processes
Programme planning and resource management
- Experience of using project management techniques
- Experienced in reconciliation of programme requirements against resource availability
- Focused on driving technical excellence
- Focused on budget and milestone adherence
- Experience of working closely with Project Management within a matrix-based Engineering organisation
- Experience of managing a structured staff development process in support of long-term business needs and staff personal development

Qualifications and Experience
- Degree (or equivalent) in an engineering or a closely related discipline with two years experience in a senior management/leadership role.
Or
- HND (or equivalent) in an engineering or a closely related discipline with five years experience in a senior management/leadership role.
- Experience should be within any organisation that uses structured design principles.
Other
- Prepared to undertake travel in the UK on an as-required basis to support engineering development activities, with occasional overnight stays.
- Prepared to undertake travel world-wide around six times each year to support engineering development and marketing activities, for typically one week on any trip
