Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

We have been asked to recruit an Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for our well established client. The Senior Design Engineers role will include the design and development of mechanical aspects of high power lasers and optical light path components

The Senior mechanical Design Engineers role:
• Lead the mechanical engineering aspects including design and assembly of high power DPSSL (Diode Pumped Solid State laser).
• Fundamental design and development in some cases from first principles, including modelling of cooling, heat exchange, stress and materials coatings.
• Take responsibility for mechanical design aspects of key projects and manage the development program and time scales through to the finished product.
• Provide management reports of development progress and times scales.
• Work in collaboration with optical and electrical design staff providing guidance and direction for needs of assigned projects.
• Liaise with other companies working in collaboration to support the product development or commercialisation.
• Identify and collaborate with vendors providing materials and services.
• Lead the production of documentation to support product description and manufacture.
• Maintain a current awareness of the market and state of the art in high power lasers.
• Direct engineers and technicians applied to the development work.
• Conduct performance and development reviews of assigned staff

Qualifications and Experience
• Qualified to degree (BSc) or PhD in Mechanics – or a relevant engineering course - or equivalent experience gained in the field
• At least 3 years experience in leading mechanical design projects, including budget responsibility.
• Experience in mechanical design of optical or laser systems, including design, modelling, construction, and testing.
• Ability to lead others and motivate staff.

English fluency, written and oral, is essential
• Must be flexible and adaptable to a changing environment.
• Knowledge of optical systems designs a distinct advantage.
• Able to handle high work volumes in a multi task mode.
• Team working is essential including relating to academic staff.
• Industrial experiences a distinct advantage.
• Ability to present technical and management reports.

This position does not include any relocation package. Salary will be between £25k and £30k depending on experience. Benefits include 25 days holiday + Christmas shutdown which changes year on year, 36.5 hour week - Monday to Thursday 8:30am to 5:00pm and Fridays 8:30am to 13:00pm, Pension - employee contributes 5% and the employer matches the same, free parking.
