post‐graduate experience. Alternatively HNC or HND with a minimum of 8 years industry
experience.
Ideally a full Member of the IMechE.
Software:
Working knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD packages.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
Nature and scope of role:
He/She will primarily be involved in the execution of major design and manufacture projects for the
offshore oil and gas industry. The equipment is exposed to high internal pressures, low and high
temperatures, external (hydrostatic) pressure and hydrocarbons. Generally located on the sea bed in
water depths beyond diver depth, the equipment has to be extremely reliable for a design life in
excess of 20 years. Typically the equipment weighs in excess of 35T and consists of pressure
containing machined block valves surrounded by a fabricated structure with the necessary hydraulic
control lines. The equipment has to interface with other associated equipment supplied by third
parties.
He/She is responsible for interpreting the relevant Client Specifications and/or Industry Standards
into safe working designs. He/She will delegate packages of work for design by juniors and be
required to approve the work on completion. He/She will be required to check and/or approve
design calculations; ensuring that the relevant Industry Codes and Client standards are met.
He/She will be required to check and/or approve assembly, test and installation procedures etc.
Knowledge of materials, corrosion, NDE techniques, manufacturing processes and techniques is
required. This will assist when he/she is required to disposition non‐conformances; as will some
degree of practical ‘hands on’ experience. Some appreciation of cost and general business
awareness will also be necessary for the design process as projects are quoted mainly on a fixed
price basis.
Projects are executed to strict schedules. He/She will manage and be responsible for the engineering
schedule; ensuring that the Team issue deliverables to the agreed plan. Direct management of
juniors to achieve these goals will be necessary as will the training and development of such
individuals.
Some direct liaison with the Client is likely. In some cases, it will be necessary to provide technical
support to offshore operations that operate 24/7 all year round.
Reporting lines:
He/She will report via a Team Leader or Supervisor to an Engineering Manager.
