Our client is a market leader in the fields of defence and nuclear engineering. They provide technical support services to the MoD and works collaboratively with the MoD and other industry partners to improve and support planning, delivery and integration.
The Engineering Director will report directly into the Managing Director for the Air Defence part of the business. This is a senior post in the Air organisation responsible for the management of and delivery from the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul organisation, provision of a continuing airworthiness organisation and adherence to aviation standards as directed by both the civil and military authorities. The post is responsible for budgetary performance and is empowered to include financial and commercial aspects of the role supported where appropriate by Divisional finance, commercial and HR departments.
The key accountabilities of the job holder will be as follows:
Manage the Engineering department to ensure compliance with corporate governance, processes and procedures including those relating to Health & Safety
Manage the relationship with key external agencies e.g. the CAA and MAA to ensure regulatory compliance
Provision of timely advice that underpins a continuing airworthiness regime
Ensure delivery of financial and performance targets
Manage delivery to meet performance objectives
Responsible to the Managing Director for ensuring an appropriate airworthiness regime in accordance with statutory, legislative and regulatory directives as issued by designated Authority (ies).
Provide advice on engineering issues and represent the company as the technical lead on engineering matters with external and internal agencies.
Manage key internal and external interfaces to ensure delivery meets the specified requirements.
Provide engineering oversight of current operational delivery
Review performance to ensure business risks are identified, reported and addressed
Support strategies to market Air to new customers
Provide technical engineering support to Business Development and Major Bids
The successful Engineering Director will:
Educated to degree standard in a relevant subject or have applicable industry experience
Someone with very recent RAF experience at a relatively senior level (Group Captain/Air Commodore)
Strong engineering/technical background - preferably involved with the latest generation of aircraft eg Typhoon.
Sound understanding of the Military Aviation Authority (MAA)
Good working knowledge of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
Experience in dealing with Government customers - preferably MoD customers
Evidence of having worked at a strategic level
Experience in managing air engineering and support operation
Contract management experience.
Experience in identifying and managing risk.
Ability to manage change driven by financial or operational requirement
Fluent and adept at interpreting financial information.
Creates and drives forward a culture that demands active 2-way engagement with all customers and stakeholders - internal and external
