Job number 112126206
Posted 18/07/2008 (14:15)
Agency/Employer Silicon Valley
Description Principal Digital Designer - Cambridge

Main purpose of the job
The development of state of the art wireless systems from specification through to detailed component-level design, and eventual hand-over to volume production.

Specifically this requires the individual to take a lead role in digital IC (FPGA and ASIC) design and digital circuit design at a board level. The job function includes both driving and contributing to the architecture specification, actual circuit design, design implementation, verification and approval for volume production of the architecture.

Type of work undertaken by the group
The Digital Systems Group forms a part of the Wireless Division and is responsible for delivering IC / FPGA design as well as board-level and overall digital system design to clients of the company. In this role the Digital Systems Group works very closely with the Wireless DSP, RF Systems and the Software Groups which also exist inside the Wireless Division.

The Wireless Division applies standards-based radio solutions and also develops custom solutions for a wide range of our clients' applications principally in the telecommunications, healthcare, consumer goods and automotive areas. In addition to design services, the company also develops proprietary intellectual property, which it can licence to its clients. Examples include an implantable medical radio architecture, DECT and Bluetooth reference designs.

Recent examples of our wireless design include a cellular radio telemetry system for real-time medical monitoring, a high-quality digital radio link for a professional intercom system, a satellite telephone, a cordless video-telephone system, and an ultrawideband (UWB) IC design in addition to a large number of more conventional applications.

Specific responsibilities
In this role you will be responsible for:

• Taking a lead role in specifying and designing digital ASIC or FPGA functions. You will take a system-wide view of product and application requirements before converting them into silicon solutions
• Taking a lead role in digital design at a board-level. You will also be responsible for guiding and reviewing PCB layout
• Defining the most suitable digital system design/architecture to meet a specification.
• Programming FPGAs to emulate the ASIC designs for lab testing before chip sign-off
• Creating production digital test vectors
• Working at all times as part of a close-knit multi-disciplinary project team focussed on delivering the design solution to our client
• Participating in sales meetings with clients to understand their requirements and demonstrate Company capability
• Preparing and contributing to proposals and quotations
• Contributing to the maintenance and development of our CAD systems to enhance our development capability
• Defining best practice for digital IC and board-level design
• Creating novel design solutions that will be of particular interest to our clients
• Identifying and pursuing new techniques and circuit solutions for digital IC design to maintain Company leading edge capability

Minimum requirements
With an appropriate background working for an Electronics Design or IC Design company, you will have experience of sub-micron CMOS technology along with digital design experience covering both FPGA/ASIC and board level circuits. You will have experience of taking a lead role for part of or the whole design process.

• Experience of sign-off and back-end flow for ASICs
• Embedded microprocessor design experience would be valuable
• Familiar with design practices for high-speed digital board design
• An appreciation of analogue design techniques. A good understanding of analogue design will be considered an advantage but is not mandatory

Experience of the following tools would be valuable:

• Synopsys VCS Verilog
• Synopsys Design Compiler
• Synopsys Tetramax
• Synplicity Synplify Pro
• Xilinx FPGA Place and Route
