One of the UK's leading companies in the field of precise motor control technology is seeking to develop the next generation of their products. This substantial investment has resulted in the creation of 2 new vacancies for Motor Control Design Engineers.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The position is necessary to strengthen and grow our core competence of embedded software design, implementation and test, for the control of AC Induction motors, AC Permanent magnet motors and brushed DC motors.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
The job holder will have significant experience working in the field of real-time embedded software for electric motor control applications. They will work in a team of 8-12 software Engineers contributing to projects which may potentially extend across all the engineering functional teams and will report directly to the Software Team Manager.
They will be qualified to a minimum graduate level in Electronic, Electrical or Software Engineering and have a keen interest to pursue a career in the design and implementation of real-time embedded motor control software in industrial products. A 2nd higher degree, such as a Masters (M.Eng.) would be favoured.
ACTIVITIES
Under the direction of the Software Team Manager, the job holder will be responsible for:-
+ Design implementation and testing of real-time embedded motor control software aspects within our range of variable speed drives – PWM generation, current loops, sensored and sensorless vector control, trajectory generators and motion control etc.
+ De-bug motor control loops on representative prototype hardware in a lab environment
+ Document, implement and test software is a structured manner in accordance with company guidelines
+ Adherence to the company’s quality procedures (ISO 9001, TickIT)
+ Following the Winovation process (stage-gate) and contributing to deliverables
+ Implementing and working to an activity plan such that projects are delivered on time and within budget
+ Working both on new product designs, maintenance and value engineering of existing designs
+ Investigating and solving reported customer issues with our products
+ Occasional site visits to customers
RESPONSIBILITIES
The job-holder will be expected to make design decisions, document, implement and test real-time embedded motor and motion control aspects within our range of variable speed AC and DC drives, under the direction of the Software Team manager.
Examples of this include microcontroller / DSP and IDE selection, PWM generation, current loops, sensored and sensorless vector control techniques, trajectory generation and motion control, software design for appropriate function, reliability and cost.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
The position requires an appropriately qualified graduate Engineer or higher 2nd degree with:-
+ Electronics, Electrical or Software Engineering Degree or higher
+ Knowledge of microcontrollers / DSPs and their applications to modern variable speed drives (real-time embedded motor control software)
+ Knowledge and experience of design, documentation and implementation of real-time embedded motor control software
+ Work with source code and documentation version control systems
+ Knowledge and experience of structured or agile software design techniques
+ Knowledge and experience of working with an ISO 9001 quality control system (TickIT)
+ Simulation and modelling techniques and auto-code generation with tools such as Matlab and Simulink (Real-Time Workshop)
+ Knowledge and experience of motion control techniques for motor control
+ C, C++ and where appropriate assembler programming
+ Knowledge and experience of power electronics and inverter topologies, general control theory design, control of electric motors
