Technical Author - Software & Hardware
Role Outline:
Working for, and reporting to the Technical Publications Manager to produce all technical Operation and Maintenance Manuals (OMMs).
Making sure that the documents produced and /or issued are of the standard and quality needed to meet the customer’s requirements and expectations.
This will involve close liaisons with various engineering disciplines and any sub-contracted companies responsible for the final production and/or provision of the OMMs.
The Technical Publications team is a small team. Thus, the candidate must be comfortable working autonomously and taking responsibility (when needed) for the document production decisions.
The candidate will be a qualified Technical Author with sound technical authoring skills, ideally wishing to develop their project and commercial management skills.
The role will also involve supporting the non-tech authoring support functions when required e.g., gathering/assessing source material and support data.
Technical Tasks:
•Make sure all OMMs are delivered on quality and on time.
•Make sure that all OMM comments are managed, recorded and actioned in a timely manner.
•Give presentations at internal and external meetings when needed.
•Offer guidance and support in the development of project OMM strategies.
•Make sure that the OMMs meet the project standards and requirements.
•Make sure that the required templates and standards are adhered to.
•Suggest or recommend improvements to achieve a more effective delivery.
•Give access to Support data to other Engineering disciplines as required.
•Record and control source data for OMMs in the necessary database.
Skills & Experience:
Essential:
•Degree, Diploma or BTEC in Tech authoring or a Degree in an Engineering discipline.
•Trained, qualified and experienced in production and quality control of technical documentation, with at least 3 years in technical authoring.
•Training in and working experience of Simplified Technical English (ASD-STE100).
•Familiar with the current technical, legal and safety requirements, or be an experience Armed Forces Technical Author.
Desirable:
•Experienced and confident in making work-related decisions independently.
•Familiar with the ILS process (e.g., Def Stan 00-60).
•Comprehensive understanding and ability to interpret and action industry specifications (e.g., JSP 180 Series), standards, methodologies and terminology as required.
Tools:
The candidate must have a thorough understanding of the latest tools and techniques for producing O&MMs, including but not limited to:
• MS Word
• MS Project
• MS Visio Professional
• Adobe FrameMaker 7.2
• Adobe Acrobat
• Adobe Captivate
• Adobe Articulate
• Content management systems
• AS1000D-associated tools and IETMs
• SGML/XML.
Relevant Experience:
Essential:
•Development and delivery of Technical OMM, in an aerospace or defence environment.
•Experience of satellite communications systems, especially satellite ground stations, would be advantageous.
Desirable:
•Sound knowledge and experience of producing OMMs to the S1000D specification.
