Our client is the UK's leading online guide to live entertainment, with more than one million visitors every month. Their development team work closely with their content and marketing staff to develop innovative new services for web and mobile, as well as maintaining their existing website.

Web PHP Developer, Bristol (1-3 years experience)

It's really important that you have an in-depth knowledge of PHP, MySQL, Javascript and all the other technologies that make a website work behind the scenes. We'll expect you to get your hands dirty, helping to maintain and extend our existing code base, as well as creating brand new sections of the website.

Company was founded 12 years ago and now has over a million readers every month. We don't have astro-turf in our meeting rooms, posh espresso machines or relaxation pods. We do have a kettle, a radio, and a team that's passionate about creating the UK's leading entertainment guide.

Responsibilities

•Writing and maintaining Object Oriented PHP code (both front- and back-end) that interfaces with a SQL database.
•Working as part of a team to design and build new services on both web and mobile platforms
Requirements

•A 2:1 Degree or better in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline.
•In-depth experience of coding in PHP, with strong OO skills
•Familiarity with both Linux and MySQL
•A good knowledge of XHTML, CSS and JS
•Experience of working in a team that uses version control systems such as SVN
We'll definitely want candidates with at least some commercial experience of PHP, even if that's been freelance or during a gap year/placement.

While most of the clients development work is carried out in PHP, you will also need to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of an OO language such as Java, as well as XHTML, CSS and Javascript. as well as the principles of OO development. Some experience developing database-driven websites in a Linux or Unix environment is also required. Above all, you need to be able to find creative solutions to problems and enjoy working in a small team of motivated developers.
