This is a medium size general hospital. It provides a comprehensive range of general medical and surgical services, including A&E, for over 300,000 people in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and parts of Buckinghamshire. The Trust has one of the country’s largest breast screening centres. The hospital has developed some specialist services including cancer, obesity, neurophysiology and oral maxillofacial surgery and has the responsibility for treating the most premature babies across the whole of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.

It provides 584 beds and 26 wards which are broken down into 14 General Wards: Surgical, Medical and Care of the Elderly patients specialist wards, High Dependency Unit, Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Acute Care Unit; two Maternity Wards and one Gynaecology ward; and three Paediatric wards with a Paediatric Assessment Unit

The hospital is located next to Junction 11 of the M1 motorway. An excellent location, enjoying the best of town and countryside – it is minutes from the Chiltern Hills and Dunstable Downs and London can be reached by train in just over half an hour. There are excellent communication links to both the north and south of the country via the M1, and also to Europe via London Luton Airport, which is under 5 miles from the hospital.
