Job Title Engineering Scheduler
Job number 128133611
Posted 04/07/2008 (19:34)
Agency/Employer Matchtech Group Plc
Description Our client, a famous name in the food & ingredients industry require an engineering scheduler for their capital improvement and maintenance engineering teams.

Back ground to maintenance planning and scheduling
All work activities / job requests are entered into a computerised maintenance management system (CMMS). These requests are turned into detailed work and maintenance plans by a team of planners and schedulers. The skill of this team is to ensure all work is pre-planned and optimised to get best utilisation of our skilled technician resource and meet the demands of the many on site business units. This is a challenging task as the plans have to cover a whole spectrum of activities from simple handy man tasks through to complex plant shut downs and maintenance outages, as well as servicing day to day breakdowns. Another major part of the team's responsibility is to develop and scheduled planned preventative Maintenance (PPM) routines to ensure we maintain a safe and reliable operation. Planned work activities are developed by a planner, deciding what need to be done and how, the scheduler then decides who should do the work and when it can be undertaken within the constraints of the operations.

The role of the scheduler
This is a Management / technician grade (dependent on specific skill set), reporting to the Refinery Area Manager. The job is day based, working as part of the maintenance development team and scheduling activities for a number of our key site operations.

The role of the scheduler is to turn planed maintenance tasks into workable plans which match people's availability, skill set, and plant availability in the correct sequence to ensure the work flows smoothly and efficiently. This often requires allowing for multiple trades and overlapping tasks. Demanding and ever changing scenarios require the schedule to be flexed to take account of breakdowns, change in production plans, customer demands, holidays, sickness and training courses. Some of the complexity is handled by a dedicated computerised scheduling tool, but most of the skill is in the person having the ability to cope with numerous tasks, unexpected changes and unforeseen circumstances. You could compare the scheduler's role to successfully playing several games of chess simultaneously.

Another essential skill is to be able to identify repetitive tasks and develop job packages to optimise work to obtain the best use the available resources. This will include the production of daily, weekly and annual planned preventative maintenance routes and tasks. These are developed in conjunction with technicians and the engineering and production managers.

The role also includes production of weekly progress reports and presentations plus chairing the weekly scheduled work review meeting. This is attended by area engineering and production managers, the purpose is to ensure work is being correctly prioritised and on target.
